Shushan Rd. wind and a painting buddy!

34  F cloudy gusting winds

I had to hang on to the easel today it was so windy!

#270 Shushan Rd.

12 x 16

$500

But more important, I painted with my friend, Cindy Rosen!

It was cold cloudy and very windy, but we had a good time!

This is the road from Salem to Shushan, I've wanted to paint this but just never got over here, nice!

My start, the wind made it hard to deal.

It's a beautiful spot, but hanging onto the easel was ridiculous!

Colors were very subtle today, and toward the end of the session, the clouds moved back off the horizon.

Close.....

I'm tempted to take it back because there are things I like about it, but a bunch of things that didn't get done.

I'm not sue why I put in the yellow line.

Cindy took this of me, as you can see I'm hanging onto the easel with my winter gloves, but it's still the best picture of me painting.

Clarks Mills; the Batenkill rages!

53  F  mostly clouds but some sunny moments!

I found this spot over a year ago,(before I started the blog)  It's off the parking lot of the engineering offices of the paper mill at the falls, this is the Battenkill, very close to where it empty's into the Hudson.

#269  Battenkill @ Clark's Mill

9" x 12"

$300

I snapped this the moment the sun came out and made that beautiful shadow on the water, which is high and raging, it's color is very muddy, so when I started to set up the scene was mostly middle tones, but the sun changed that.

I had done one from the other side of the road, and the concrete bridge ended up looking really weird, I'll include it later....

This is essentially what I'm looking at.

I wanted to keep the bridge dark, because the concrete is stained and looks weird and I wanted to emphasize it's bulk and not it's surface condition, and I wanted it to contrast with the light I had coming from behind and illuminating the far bank and water.

The water was a totally weird color, the reflection of the light makes any "local" color a ghost of itself, I mean the water is a brownish green but the reflection is mostly the light of the sky, but it's got a bit of that water color too.

By the time I put the trees in I'm very close. I'm deciding what details I need and what details I can live without. The thing about the trees, is they give you an opportunity to "break up" some of the other forms that will look more interesting broken, like that roof, and the building just above the bridge.

I put one line for the light on the top rail of the bridge, and a few bushes on the island before and after the center abutment.

My Pallet at the start.

My Pallet at the end.

Looking just up river, the roar of the falls attracted me to the spot as well. I could have just as easily painted this scene.

A security  guard came by, I asked him if it was OK to be there, he said I was supposed to be on the other side of the fence, but he liked what I was doing, and I thanked him.

My set up.

Paintings from July and August, with prices

This has been on the short list because a friend was interested in a painting from the Adirondacks. We go most of July and a number of other weekends and have great friends who also have places on the west side of 6th Lake in Inlet, NY,

All paintings are oil on canvas panel, they are numbered, signed and dated on the back. Their titles are their locations. Each one is unique, and was painted in location, usually in one sitting. There is a blog post for most paintings, I've included the links.

I'm including a frame as well ash shipping in the price, most are simple black frames, and are ready to hang.
Don't hesitate to ask questions or make comments, or request a commissioned work, for a special place!

Here they are: ( note some of these photos are way too blue.....)

Battenkill at Route 29 in Greenwich, the trouble with "the money shot"

35  F  sunny with some hazy overcast interludes, some wind.
I put a reference to the "money shot" because I couldn't get the picture to line up with the landscape, it might have to do with the nature of this scene, and my viewpoint, the distance from the panel that I painted it from, does it matter, no!
#268 Battenkill @ Rt. 29, Greenwich.

$500

After doing the Mohawk River painting I was looking for grand vistas of rivers, and I've been by this spot many times, so when I drove by yesterday bingo!

I started with darks but I probably should have done whites.

Here it is.

When I started the water was pretty dark, but there was reflected light and it was blue in color, when ever there is a reflection on water, and changing light, (when isn't there?) you can count on drastic changes in it, I would end up scrapping the water off twice before I left the scene today.

I love the hills when the snow is on them, and this scene had one, perfect distance from the spot, and with the falls, back lit, what could be better?

At this point I had most of the panel in play and I needed to work on the falls, I almost hate this part because it's a lot about drawing the forms so they look right, is this a test?  Man made items do this but I love the falls and wanted it to work, so.....

Moving right along....

Adding trees. I let the mid distance to remain very sketchy, because it looked that way.

So here is where I ended up, I started at 11:30 and finished around 2:00 the sun was right in the middle of the sky, it reached the surface of the panel just as I was finishing, there were clouds but they were large and sort of hazy masses, and they made no trouble. This was the longest session in ages, I used gloves and had most of my layers on (it was a bit windy) overall I finished because it was getting over worked.

Here was my scene when I started. It wasn't what I thought I'd do with this spot, but the composition worked, and the light was right.

This is looking up-river, and mostly east. I'm never up early enough for that.

This is the scene I thought I was going to get, it has a trestle RR bridge in it, but too many trees, even I couldn't thin them out today. (maybe I'll come back with a chain saw!)

Looking north on Rt. 29, Greenwich

Looking south on Rt. 29, were in the village limits, there isn't that much traffic and it's not going too fast, plus I have the guard rail, so although it's far from a pastoral spot, I'll do what I need to do to get to my scene.  generally places like this make it hard for visitors, I don't mean to be anti-social, but.....
