NFS

I'm not sure how Hope agreed to sit still, she's generally in constant motion!

This was the first attempt at any kind of figurative work in I don't know how long,(that would be decades)

I couldn't get the face any better than this, and trying to put details in, like eye brows or lashes just made a mess, but it was a good exersize and now I'm not scared.

I started this Friday morning, sorry these photos are bad....

I'm hopelessly behind in making panels, so I'm happy to paint on paper...

There is something unfamiliar in the familiar, and that's what I was looking at here. The lake in the morning is often smooth as glass, I wasn't ready to paint then..... but by the time I started this, the shadow of the Princess gave a clear view of the bottom of the lake......

Hope painting.....

Hope's painting!

This is the first photo. I forgot to take any more......but here we are doing more and more of the familiar. I did finish this and will, someday photograph and post it!

S.A.W. Hill conquered by the Caravan

82  F  cloudy with a few drops in the air

I forgot my camera again today so these are more flip phone pics.

We're  at the top of The hill
@ Salem Art Works in Salem, NY, looking North, Northwest or something like that.

The Caravan made it because they put in this amazing road up here! last year I had my truck, and it could go up this hill, but a Caravan wouldn't have made it.

I'm using a prepared piece of canvas, and it's really smooth compared to what I normally use, which is much rougher, and has much more texture.

There was plenty of atmospheric perspective on this one.

The sight-size shot.

This is where I ended up, I had almost an hour while Hope was at her pottery class, fun for all!

Outback 85 degrees of difference.

85  F  some sun, some clouds

Oil on treated paper

The rain held off, the sun was even out for a bit, so I did a default "outback" The last time I did this pretty much same scene it was 0  degrees, yes, that's zero Fahrenheit. Here is the blog post from that day:'
http://mattchinianpaintingblog.blogspot.com/2014/01/view-from-shop-todays-crazy-cold.html

My reasoning for doing these "default paintings, sketches, really, is to practice trying to get the light, trying to get some kind of composition......

I'm also liking the idea od doing scenes, not just in different seasons, but over different years to see if I've progressed any (this is the third or maybe the forth of this exact scene)

I touched it up a bit after I took this, but basically here is where I ended up, not much more than 1/2 hour, better spent than doing a lot of things....

Here is my scene, yes that's a foot, it's cast concrete, i made it in 1992, I think, when i was making big heavy sculptures, most haven't survived.

Finished June Paintings (most)

I'm putting these out now because If I wait, it'll be two months. These are not all of them, I did 26 paintings last month, including 12 in Canandaigua, 2 are @ Spa Fine Art http://www.spa-fine-art.com/Matt-Chinian.html , one was a gift to my host there,  three haven't been photographed (they were the last ones, done in the Adirondacks) and some just didn't make the cut.

All paintings are oil on canvas panel (unless otherwise indicated, some are oil on treated paper) They also have blog posts about them, so go ahead and look them up!

As of now all are available, e-mail for prices.

The forecast was for rain in the afternoon, I was out and scouting this spot by 10:00, not bad, for me!

I've painted this bridge quite a few times, but never from this shore, there is a path, and it's active with fishermen, but none were here this morning.  When I first arrived the sun was out, it played with the clouds, but co-operated enough so I could get some shadows!

When the clouds are out there aren't many shadows, and not that much dark, so I put in what I could.

I did the light of the abutment next, then started in on the greens.  I forgot a second blue, but it didn't seem to matter.

The water was still murky from the torrential rains we've had, but not as much as the Hoosick River two days ago, still it presented a challenge, and as an element I wasn't as excited as i was in general with this scene.

It was looking a bit flat at this point, my sun was coming and going, and I was able to get some depth into it....

Getting close!

Closer!

At the last minute I straightened up some of the bridge, I didn't want it too tight, but it shouldn't distract either.

Sight-size shot.

Ollie always likes to come to the river, he can swim......

This spot is very close to the parking spot, less than 100 yards!
