Canandaigua, Day two, by 4!

64  F  cloudy with a few breaks for sun.

I was determined not to burn out too quickly this time, so I had a reasonably leisuerly morning and didn't rush out the door, I got a text from my new real friend, Cathy Whitehead, who said she'd be at the waterfalls.....

I had mixed feelings about the place, of course it was beautiful, but I was out of my comfort zone, and it took me a long time to get there!

I enjoyed the process of this, as it lent itself well to a real "all over" impressionistic handling of the paint and surface.

The light coming into the scene is disorienting, not that anything is oriented in a scene like this.

I liked that the paint was going on with some jazz, but wasn't sure what I felt about the orange tone showing through.

I wanted to keep it pretty sketch like and I think I succeeded in that respect.

The sun came and went, which mede it difficult to get it.

I did this scene last year, and you could hardly see 50 feet, than it rained, and rained.....

Yes this does look weird!

Canandaigua Lake here I am!

70  F  overcast, with clouds.

Here we are,  East lake Rd, overlooking Lake Canandaigua, Yeates County.

I got tho town before 1;00, about 4 1/2 hr. car ride from Cambridge, mostly west, the van was comfortable to drive, cruise control and air conditioning!

I checked in and got my canvases stamped, and tried to find a decent map....I drove around more and finally got the view I was looking for, I had to start with a view of the lake!

I'm not much of a sky guy.

This was actually a hard scene to find, the road was paved with a yellow stripe, but there wasn't much traffic.



I made the water color with the sky colors and added a bit of pthalo. (a tiny bit!)

Some times I find it easier to work background-to-foreground, as I did today.

 I knew the green was wrong, but I started with it anyway, I was able to recover!

This is the time of doubt, and it seems like every painting goes through this phase, (some never get out!)

I likes the roof tops peaking out of the foliage, and there is a tiny bit of the bay over to the left of the point.

I've got two days to get ready for my painting festival in Canandaigua, NY, and I'm hopelessly behind.... so I went out and painted this A.M. before a soccer game....

 This is a favorite spot, and still very challenging. I wanted to do a small close-up.

There wan't a lot of darkness in this but the darks present held a lot of weight.

Green!

The reflection was made up of a color that looked light blue in some respects and brown in others, depending on how you move your eye over the surface.

I had a hard time with the dirt, didn't know how light it was supposed to be, and in general the black mix, changing brands of ultra marine.....

This painting just sorta poked along.....

The shadow gave me some trouble....

The cows finally made it over to my field of vision, and she was an easy study.

The scene, there is so much detail to life...... how does one even begin to represent it in paint, you must be mad even to try!

 Here is my pallet, I've had trouble with my mixed black since I changed brands of ultramarine blue, maybe I should just use some black...
