Content with cows; video snippet on subject matter.

28  F  late sunshine.
Here is the "money shot" from today.

#438 Content Farm Rd.

7 x 7

The sun sets fast at this time of day, it's 3:20.

How to get that light was the question.

Sorry I didn't take more progress shots, there was no time, that shadow moved fast.

Here is the link to my u-tube video, it's on subject matter.

The scene at the end of the session.

I've been here a few times before.

Riley Hill Rd. Salem, NY.

26  F  sunny a bit of wind.
The "Money shot"

#437 Riley Hill Rd, Salem

11 x 14

The light was beautiful today, I was up @ SAW, so I went to paint in Salem, I'm actually in the village of Salem.

I started with the sky.

There was a lot of light ocher/ tan, that were very close in value, it was the large expanse of  road and the field on the right.

The little bits of variations in the large expanses of  foreground hold a lot of importance, I'm not sure if I got them, but if snow comes this way I'll need to figure it out.

Here is where I ended up, at the last minute I put in the shadow across the road, and I think it worked.

My scene.

Sight-size shot.

Nice.

In the cold I needed some medium, because the paint gets too thick.
I mixed up, equal parts stand oil, damar varnish and turpentine.
I put it in a bottle cap on my pallet, and dip my brush in it or put a few drops in the paint.

Legrys Rd. @ Plains Rd. OK it's cold now.

26  F  windy, cloudy with some sun.

The cold is ratcheting down...

#436 Legrey's Rd. @ Plains Rd.

8 x 10

I wasn't going to go out today, the forecast was for rain, but the sun came out a bit, even though there were some gusts of wind.

These dark greys.

The dirt, ethereal, really,

Largest piece of saturated color.

These gain silos are why I chose the scene, such bright, regular forms.

Getting the values to behave themselves is the name of the game, the value of the shaded part of the silo is still pretty light as is the shadow part of the clouds.

My thin lines continue to be troublesome, maybe I'm shivering too much.

Sight-size shot.

This area isn't the fancy side of town, but it's got some awesome views and is becoming a favorite.

I was putting off wearing my serious winter boots and my feet got cold, so next time.....

So. Cambridge Rd. @ Whiteside Rd.: the winter has begun

37  F  sunny!
Today was the first day I wore long underwear, a coat and my fingerless gloves.

#435 So. Cambridge Rd. @ Whiteside Rd.

12 x 16

It was a sun-filled afternoon, and the sun looks different through a clear sky and a few clouds.

When I started I anticipated that the sun would move off my panel, but I didn't want that glaring sun-behind-the-painting thing I seem to always get. Here I just put in my darkest places.

I had a difficult time with the green, generally, it's dulled from the summer, and most of the leaves are down. I chose this place because it has a crossroad, and farm, the corn wasn't cut and was casting a shadow across the road, what more could you want!

The shadows move quickly, but If I have a handle on the tones of the lights and the darks I can figure out where the shadow should be, I don't want to chase the shadows.

Here is where I ended up, I generally put in the telephone poles and other linear stuff last, although I miss having those elements in play earlier, t would be awkward to execute.

Nice!

Here is my pallet, the nice thing about winter is that the paint will stay much longer in the cold. It also shows how the sun shadowed the paint. (yes this is for you, Chani!)

Sight-size shot.

Battenkill from the thicket; another RR bridge, Middle Falls

40  F  some sun, some hazy cloud cover
Once again I find myself on the river, by a RR bridge.

#434 Battenkill @ RR bridge, Middle Falls.

I found this spot, it was at the far end of a golf course. I have been to the other side last year, but didn't paint there, many more places just a stones throw from here!

The story was in the reflection...

From where I was, it looked like the angle of the reflected bridge was much more acute than the real bridge, I think the photo flattened it out.

At some point we got a little breeze and my reflection was lost!  Luckily  the breeze died down and I was able to continue.

Here is where I finished, there were some darks that I couldn't get dark enough, or so I thought.

My scene.

Maybe I should have brought black.

I'm in the thicket without a lot of space to move around in. Had this been the spring, this spot would be very wet!

This is on State Rt. 29 in Middle Falls, NY. There is a fishing access site, although the exact spot of it was un-clear, the golf course occupies a large swath of river front, I just drove around on the golf-cart lanes, there were no signs that said I couldn't. When I was leaving a gentleman said I could park in the lot near the club house.

Video on paint handling (painting #433, Duell Hollow with sheep)

Here is my video from today, hope you like it!

Duel Hollow @ Turnpike, with friends and a video!

60  F mostly sunny.
The money shot from today.

#433  Duel Hollow @ Turnpike Rd.

8 x 10

Here is a link to the video on paint handling, it's just over 4 minutes, so what can I say in four minutes? just the most important bits.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zKbXGvvZl8

It seems I forgot to take a lot of progress photos, doing the video sometimes has it's drawbacks.

It was unusually warm today, and I got a reasonably early start, there were sheep in the field, but not where I wanted them!

Here is where I ended up, a couple of sheep moved into my scene, and they reluctantly co-operated for a few minutes.

Here is the scene in sun shine
