More white, more white!

This was yesterday......
41  F  sunny!

           #740  Burgoyne St.. Schuylerville, NY  3-30-16  11x14

The Saratoga Monument is right up the road.

I liked both the white off of the houses on the right as well as the shadows crossing the road.

Just a few progress shots, this tone is on the dark side, but not the darkest value, and opposite in color.

Later on yesterday the sun stayed out and the shadows were even better.

Downtown

41  F  sun with some clouds

       #739  S. Union St.    3-29-16   12x16

2nd time here, the parking lot of the grocery store just down the street from my house, the light on the building across the street, and a few other spots are bright and thrilling at this time of day, in this kind of light.  There is a lot of visual chaos, the cars and trucks move about, the clouds come and go, and there is a lot of "Stuff"

While I'm looking at the light in the scene, the bright light on my panel can be shockingly bright.

      Today's money shot.

Here are a few photos of the barn repair project that's also been going on.

The building needs to be straightened out before a new roof goes on, the main reason I need to do this work.

Happy Easter! More white, more white!

I found this house (it's for sale and unoccupied) along route 29 near East Greenwich, the light was on it, and I also liked the pattern of siding and trees, the light and the shadow.  The last few days I've been working on my barn, jacking up and adding a lot of new wood to keep it there, and I've got the muscle aches to prove it.  Tomorrow is Easter, time for family, chocolate bunnies and a little rest, Happy Easter!

In the shadows of Salem, NY.

45  sunny with a few clouds

        #735  Vail Rd, Salem, NY.  3-21-16  12x16

Salem had an industrial past, hidden on the back streets.

I follow my hunches, and if there is an idea I want to explore, I go ahead. Often times that leads me to some pretty poorly done work, other times it leads me to some cool stuff, today I don't even know where it lead me, at first I thought it was pretty bad, but I got it home ant I thought it was just a little bad, but had some thing worthy of future exploration.  The shadow was very dominant, but within the shadow was at least a little explanation, there was some indication of the windows, the paint, the pole, etc,  even if the contrast to the light was way bigger.

As always thanks for reading my blog!  feel free to ask questions or leave a comment, thanks!

Apollo #1

I'm not sure this is finished, but I got it here after a lot of musing and preparation: my first sight-size cast drawing in 35 years! The last one done in Williamstown, MA, summer of 1980, studying under R.H. Ives Gammell, and a lifetime away.  I've been itching to try another one for some time, maybe to start some still-life work, maybe just to practice, we'll see where this takes me.

I bought the cast from an antique store down the street, I made the easel. the stand and the wall was from my booth I made for the trade show last month.

In my shop, I set up the lighting to draw at night.  I have a carpet sample (you can barely see it) to stand on.

Wall-to-wall sunshine, three paintings!

26  F   sunny.

This morning.....

I wanted the bright light off a building, I found it here.

There was a lot of traffic on the road, but I had only one visitor, an old friend who lives there came out and chatted with me for a few minutes.

#733  Outback  3-19-16   8x10

I drove around the real big block, and came back home wondering why I just didn't paint the shadow right here, in back of my shop.

Just after noon.

I went to take Emma and a friend for an indoor soccer game, the Mohawk river is not far, so I came and found the sun reflecting like so:

It didn't last long like this, and I didn't have much time......

Hudson River @ Stillwater

58  F  sunny, then clouds.

My scene.

My spot and set up, just a few feet from my van.

Again, it took me a long time and a lot of driving around to get to this spot, I've never painted this scene, but I painted just down the road this summer.  I wish I could just decide where to go and paint, but I wander, and think too much about subject, about place and all of that stuff, and the light is always different, so I fell back on a familiar type of bridge over the Hudson picture, even though I wanted a town scene with sunshine on a white painted building. In all fairness I looked, but didn't find the exact example of what I was looking for, so maybe I have more bridges in my system to do, and maybe that's just fine.  There is tomorrow (or the next day if it rains!)
